After School Enrichment
At this time when childhood obesity is an epidemic, and what used to be “adult onset” diabetes is occurring with increasing frequency in children of all ages, our kids need regular physical activity now more than ever. But pressures on schools – in part related the 2011 $5 billion budget cut from school funding which eliminated many after school enrichment programs including physical education – are causing reductions, not increases, in daily physical activity. Texas ranks 32 in overall prevalence with 32.2% of children considered either overweight or obese. The Texas prevalence of overweight and obese children has not fallen since 2003. Physical activity is vital for a child’s health. It is also vital for their attentiveness and concentration. As a parent of 3 children myself, I know all too well that young children can be restless and rambunctious. They need to move as rambunctiousness is a normal, healthy childhood condition- and calls out for recess and physical activity, not Ritalin or a time-out. It is perhaps no coincidence that as daily physical activity levels decline, the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is made with ever increasing frequency.
But how do we handle the kids need for regular activity, with the needs of schools to dedicate as much time to possible to teaching? How do we fit a square peg into a round hole? By carving the peg, or re-shaping the hole! Introducing The Fitness School.
Inspired by my 3 kids, who have all been introduced into fitness by 3 years old, The Fitness School’s After School Enrichment curriculum converts time after school into productive, health-promoting activity. The program is based on the building blocks of fitness introducing all children regardless of age, competency level or current fitness level to a meaningful regime of fitness building skills that will last a lifetime!
Delivered on campus and after school, The Fitness School provides kids a means to dissipate their restless energy and keep our children active.
With The Fitness School’s After School Enrichment now approved in Round Rock and Austin ISD our program is affordable and fun and can be in addition to any other physical education program a school may provide. The program is designed to address, promote and enhance our kid’s fitness, health and wellness experiences.
As a fitness professional, I am deeply honored that The Fitness School will help play a role in the physical education of our children and community but as a parent I thank you for taking the steps to begin to solve this challenge; which we will…one step at a time.
